Star Trek DVD Box Set: A good gift for trekkies
Star Trek is a popular science fiction television series from America that debuted in 1966. Gene Roddenberry created the series revolving around the adventures of humans and aliens serving in the humanitarian and peacekeeping Starfleet travelling through space. The spaceborne armada of the United Federation of Planets is led by the famous character, Captain James T. Kirk. Each episode had suspenseful adventure with a morality story since the creator wanted to show mankind the consequences of certain political agendas for instance what could happen to the world if violence was not ended. Most of the episodes reflected issues relevant during the 60s including war and peace, the value of personal loyalty, authoritarianism, imperialism, class warfare, economics, racism, religion, human rights, feminism, and the role of technology.
The conflicts and political issues were more of a narrative story of the existing cultural realities, Star Trek: The Original Series addressed issues significant to the counter-culture youth movement of the 60s. Episodes like “The Apple”, “Who Mourns for Adonais?”, “The Mark of Gideon”, and “The Return of the Archons” reflected anti-religious and anti-establishment themes. Episodes like “Bread and Circuses” and “The Omega Glory” had more pro-religion and patriotic themes. The bold themes were continuously faced with censorship issues during the 1960s by the Broadcast Standards Department that routinely censored scripts and demanded for cuts or changes in several scenes.
Apart from the suspense and morality the series were also known for its great sense of humor. The friendly bickering of Spock and McCoy’s were well written and well appreciated by viewers. Episodes like “The Trouble with Tribbles”, “I, Mudd”, and “A Piece of the Action” were staged as comedies.
All of the 79 episodes of the original series have been digitally re-mastered and been released on DVD. The Star Trek DVD box set is a must have and a good gift for Trekkies since it includes the comedy of Spock and McCoy and the charming wonders of Captain James T. Kirk.
