I want to buy a dvd/vcr combo but don’t know what is the best brand to buy?
I saved my collection of Disney VHS as I really like to watch them.But I do not have a vcr at my new place.I was trying to find a cheap used one but now their all expensive.I saw that it is cheaper to buy a dvd/vcr combo but I don’t know what brand is the best to go with…Any suggestions?
A few points:
1. If your Disney tapes were commercially made, they WILL have Macrovision
copy protection on them, as will most other legitimate prerecorded material.
All DVCRs (that’s another name for combo machines)
are designed so that they WILL NOT copy such tapes to DVD
(nor would they copy a commercially-made DVD to tape).
Copying commercially-made tapes (or DVDs) requires a separate VCR
(or DVD player) and DVD recorder (or VCR), with a copy-protection defeater
(such as my SIMA “GoDVD!” model CT-2) connected between them.
[It also requires that you violate copyright laws, but you should have known that.]
2. Most brands and models of DVCRs are of about equally poor quality;
there have never been, and won’t ever be, any really good ones.
That said, I’d lean heavily in the direction of Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, and JVC.
3. Good used VCRs frequently turn up at thrift stores. [I missed a
near-new Panasonic by less than a minute sometime last year.]
Also, go to estate sales. I bought a like-new JVC HR-S5902U
(S-VHS) for about $13 at an estate sale a few years ago.
Don’t buy any used VCR, though, unless it includes the correct remote
and you THOROUGHLY test it first.
Check operation of play, pause, fast forward, rewind,
picture search, eject, and all other functions.
Try several different tapes to confirm that
the machine will play them properly (tracking).
